Color and Branding – What Makes You Stand Out?

Color Psychology in Marketing

Picture this: you have just launched a business, congratulations!

It’s time to establish your brand as one worth noticing and there are many details to consider when creating core messaging, including a mission statement, the vision, and the value you bring to the marketplace. Not to mention additional aspects like social media presence and a website.

But there is something in all branding that cannot be overlooked, and that is color.

While Advanced Media Pro is newly established, our experts have over 20 years of experience in the industry and have worked with a variety of clients; using the right colors for a brand is key, and we understand that! So, we wanted to share three reasons why color is so important to a brand, using our official logo as an example!

Communicating with Color

Have you ever felt calm while staring at the ocean, or slightly tense when the traffic light turns yellow? Unconscious or otherwise, color is one of the strongest communication tools today; from eliciting emotions and reactions, changing our moods, or even affecting our energy, color impacts our everyday lives.

It’s no wonder that marketers put such an emphasis on color!

With the understanding that consumers always think on an emotional basis rather than logical, a brand has to stand out immediately with an effective color palette that can affect the consumer’s decision-making skills.

This was step one for the Advanced Media Pro (or AMP for short) logo creation, we realized that for a marketing agency to stand out, we would need a color that could easily grab hold of a client and use its shorthand to establish our mission as a company.

But this came with another question, if color inherently attracts a consumer, which color works best? This is where color psychology comes in!

Colors ALWAYS Mean Something

If color affects a consumer’s behavior, it must mean that color has some sort of meaning. Think carefully about the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue, those colors alone already have some sort of emotional connection. Add in shades, tints, and tones, and we now have a rainbow of color marketing opportunities. Hubspot’s Color Psychology in Marketing contains a detailed infographic of what colors mean and how they apply to some of the most well-known brands. For example, red is described as bold, adventurous, and energetic, perfect for the soda brand, Coca-Cola!

This is where step two of AMP’s logo creation came in, as a company we wanted to convey a sense of affordability, friendliness, and excitement without being overwhelming.

Orange fit the bill perfectly, a mix of red and yellow that was energetic without being too intense!

Important to note is that orange is not the only color in our palette, white and dark-gray are our secondary colors. They not only help orange stand out further as the main color for the brand, but their own meanings add onto what AMP is as a company. White usually signifies simplicity, independence, and modernity, while black (and its shades) signals confidence, sophistication, and power.

A Palette Makes a Brand

So, what does this mean for AMP? Having orange as the main with white and dark-gray as secondary colors, we have established the following:

AMP is a company that works to make a fun and easy experience for a client, while offering high-quality deliverables in an affordable manner.

This is the goal for any business when working on their branding or even rebranding, using color as a shorthand to explain who they are. But with so many colors in the world, you might think, “what color is right for my brand?”

The answer? It depends, there is no “right” or “wrong” color palette, it’s how you use them to describe your brand for your consumers.
